Strangers in the night / 7'25'' / Adrien Clanché (France, 2019) ENSAD Nancy
One year after the Strasbourg attack, the testimony of two people, unknown among other unknowns on the longest night of their lives. Strangers in the night, the work of Joana Vasconcelos exhibited at the same time in Strasbourg, presents a car filled with stuffed animals and covered with fake firearms while playing the eponymous music of Frank Sinatra in a loop. An hour before the fateful hour our characters caught themselves on video in front of this room, which will quickly take on meaning.
Un an après l'attentat de Strasbourg, le témoignage de deux personnes, inconnues parmi d'autres inconnus dans la nuit la plus longue de leur vie. Strangers in the night, l'oeuvre de Joana Vasconcelos exposée au même moment à Strasbourg, présente une voiture remplie de peluches et recouvertes d'armes à feu factices en jouant en boucle la musique éponyme de Frank Sinatra. Une heure avant l'heure fatidique nos personnages se sont pris en vidéo devant cette pièce, qui prendra très vite sens.

Double vision on the reality of the living. Capture of still shots by systematically opposing two images. Each time one of them seems to evoke the ecosystem or at least the elements that compose it, while it is compared to another image representing human action through these same elements.
Vision double sur la réalité du vivant. Capture de plans fixes en opposant systématiquement deux images. À chaque fois l’une d’entre-elles semble évoquer l'écosystème ou tout du moins les éléments qui le composent, tandis qu’elle est comparée à une autre image représentant l’action humaine à travers ces mêmes éléments.

Following the current context, having neither equipment nor workshop, I had to continue working. The computer is a very good tool in this kind of situation. I am a painter so instinctively, creating a parallel between the pictorial space and the screen space came to me very instinctively. Paint in the screen, while carrying out a poetic reflection, like a poetics of the screen space. A reflection leading to a fiction, a fabrication. The screen has therefore become more than a tool, it is the digital territory of a cyborg painting, the digital territory of a cyber philosophy, and the digital territory of cyber daydreams and cyber fabulations.
Suite au contexte actuel (confinement du 17 mars au 11 mai), n'ayant ni matériel ni atelier, il fallait que je continue de travailler. L'ordinateur est un très bon outil dans ce genre de situation.
Je suis peintre alors instinctivement, créer un parallèle entre l'espace pictural et l'espace de l'écran m'est venu de manière très instinctive. Peindre dans l'écran, tout en menant une réflexion poétique, comme une poétique de l'espace de l'écran. Une réflexion amenant à une fiction, une fabulation. L'écran est donc devenu plus qu'un outil, il est le territoire digital d'une peinture cyborg, le territoire digital d'une cyber philosophie, et le territoire digital de cyber rêveries et de cyber fabulations.

I looked for a soundscape with a multitude of different sounds that I built on a single analog synthesizer. I then found it interesting to focus on the detail of a decrescendo of pain, impalpable and fleeting sensation, playing with the idea of video exposure and exposure to the sun.
J’ai cherché une ambiance sonore avec une multitude de sons différents que j’ai construit sur un seul synthétiseur analogique. J’ai ensuite trouvé intéressant de se concentrer sur le détail d’un decrescendo de la douleur, sensation impalpable et fugace, en jouant avec l'idée d'exposition vidéo et d'exposition au soleil.

"Torches of Liberty" is the expression given to cigarettes during an advertising campaign for Lucky Strike in 1929 to promote cigarettes as a vehicle for female empowerment. The story of this campaign is told by his own director: Edward Bernays, nephew of Sigmund Freud and public relations consultant.
Les « Flambeaux de la Liberté » est l’expression qui a été donnée aux cigarettes durant une campagne publicitaire pour Lucky Strike en 1929 afin de promouvoir la cigarette comme vecteur de l’émancipation féminine. L’histoire de cette campagne est racontée par son propre metteur en scène : Edward Bernays, neveu de Sigmund Freud et conseillé en relations publiques.

A wandering in the heart of the mysterious forest of Valtavaara in the Arctic Circle where the trees, burdened by the weight of snow, take curious sculptural shapes.

Déambulation au cœur de la mystérieuse forêt de Valtavaara, au cercle polaire arctique, où les arbres croulant sous le poids de la neige prennent de curieuses formes sculpturales.
